Hunan Contaminated Site Vertical Barrier Inspection
Background
On the western bank of the Xiang River, this ~17-hectare site is a representative heavy-metal remediation project. To control chromate migration, a closed HDPE flexible vertical cut-off barrier was built around the contaminated zone (1,581.2 m) and the chromium-slag area (667.0 m).
Challenge
Construction quality of a deep flexible vertical barrier directly determines downstream groundwater safety, requiring full-cycle inspection of embedment depth, lap-seam integrity, overall continuity and surface defects — plus ongoing validation in operation.
Solution
Custom probes verified embedment depth; dipole tests confirmed lap-seam sealing for single panels; post-backfill dipole surveys verified overall continuity; pre-installation arc testing method scanned for pinholes and scratches. Periodic resistivity surveys outside the barrier track containment in service.
Results
Surface defects and shortfalls in embedment depth identified and repaired
Full-cycle QA secured construction quality of the cut-off system
Post-commissioning resistivity monitoring shows no contaminant migration
Provides a transferable technical pathway for non-ferrous metallurgical remediation projects
